SPIRE State Approvals

More states are addressing dyslexia—and recognizing SPIRE

Multiple states have adopted standards to support students with dyslexia. In more and more of them, SPIRE has been approved or recommended as an instructional tool for dyslexia and reading intervention.

Alabama

Approved Alabama Literacy Act Intervention Programs

  • Grades: K–3

SPIRE, including seven levels of instruction, is approved and recommended for reading intervention and/or dyslexia-specific intervention as providing direct and explicit teacher-led instruction, being grounded in current research in the science of teaching reading, and best meeting the requirements of the Alabama Literacy Act.

Arizona

Arizona DOE Recognizes SPIRE and SPIRE Foundations: Sounds Sensible as Green-Rated MOWR Supplemental & Intervention Programs

  • Grades: K–3

SPIRE reading intervention together with SPIRE Foundations: Sounds Sensible (SPIRE Pre-Level 1) provide explicit, systematic, multisensory literacy instruction for striving readers, students with learning disabilities including dyslexia, English Language Learners, and Special Education, and meet all criteria for ESSA-level evidence.

Arkansas

Arkansas Literacy Curriculum Approved Programs

  • Grades: K–12

SPIRE, including seven levels of instruction, is approved literacy curriculum programs for both dyslexia and reading intervention.

Colorado

Advisory List of Instructional Programming

  • Grades: K–3

SPIRE, including seven levels of instruction, is on the Advisory List of Instruction Programming as an approved intervention program identified through the READ Act Instructional Programming Review Process. The READ Act requires the Colorado Department of Education to identify quality reading instructional programs for optional use by local education agencies.

Indiana

Dyslexia Programming Guidance for Schools: Approved Assessments for Learning Characteristics Related to Dyslexia

  • Grades: K–3

The SPIRE Initial Placement Assessment is on Indiana Department of Education's list of approved dyslexia diagnostic assessments. The approval helps ensure students across the state are screened in a fair and trustworthy way that provides clear flags for learning characteristics related to dyslexia.

Kansas

Approved List of Evidence-Based Practices and Programs

  • Grades: K–12

SPIRE, including seven levels of instruction, is on the Kansas State Department of Education list of approved programs that meet ESSA and K.S.A 72-5153 (d) requirements to support evidence-based practices for at-risk programs and instructions.

Louisiana

Instructional Materials Tiered Reviews

  • Grades: 3-8

Louisiana Believes recognizes SPIRE, including seven levels of instruction, as Tier 1, its highest rating of quality for a Foundation of Reading Intensive Intervention program.

Mississippi

Evidence-Based Academic Interventions Approved List

  • Grades: K-12

  • RTI/MTSS Tiers: Tiers 2 or 3

SPIRE, including seven levels of instruction, was reviewed and approved by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) for evidence-based academic interventions that address the academic needs for students in Tier 2 or Tier 3.

New Mexico

Adopted Supplemental Instructional Materials for K-8 Structured Literacy

  • Grades: K-8

SPIRE, including seven levels of instruction, is on the New Mexico Public Education Department adopted list of K–8 English Language Arts, Spanish Language Arts, English Language Development, and World Languages Instructional Materials; and the program is found on the adopted list of K-2 Structured Literacy Multiple List Recommendations.

Ohio

Ohio Approves Evidence-Based SPIRE and SPIRE Foundations: Sounds Sensible for PreK–12 Reading Intervention

  • Grades: PreK-12

SPIRE and SPIRE Foundations: Sounds Sensible (SPIRE Pre-Level 1) provide explicit, systematic, multisensory literacy instruction that addresses all five pillars of reading. These easy-to-implement, science of reading-aligned programs meet Ohio Department of Education & Workforce criteria for evidence-based reading intervention.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma Interventions List

  • Grades: K-5

  • RTI/MTSS Tiers: Tier 3

SPIRE, including seven levels of instruction, is approved by the Oklahoma Department of Education as a K–5 reading intervention program under the Reading Sufficiency Act (RSA).

Utah

Utah State Board of Education's Approved Evidence-Based Curriculum List

  • Grades: K–8

SPIRE reading intervention includes seven levels of explicit, structured literacy instruction on phonemic awareness and phonics, starting with Pre-Level 1 (SPIRE Foundations: Sounds Sensible) and moving into SPIRE Levels 1–6.


Virginia

Virginia Board of Education Approved Instructional Programs

  • Grades: K–5

The Virginia Board of Education has approved SPIRE, including seven levels of instruction, as an intervention program that meets the requirements of the Virgina Literacy Act (VLA). This approval resulted from a rigorous evaluation of instructional programs for alignment with evidence-based literacy instruction (EBLI), science-based reading research (SBRR), and the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL).
